Why Do People Get Pets? 

  Most people who know me know I am a huge animal lover.  Recently my friends' daughter asked me the above statement "Why do people get pets?  Great question I said, and quickly replied because they love animals.  Short to the point answer for a small child assuming she would be satisfied, and she was.  However, while driving home I couldn't help but think of her question.  I know just like you all know the answer isn't that complex there are many reasons people get pets.

      I myself have always loved and worked with animals, but that doesn't mean I owned any.  Because the truth is ( I didn't).  Growing up my family always had cats I loved cuddling with them. Yet I dreaded feeding time "their food smelled horrible" I  despised cleaning their litter box, how disgusting.  I saw how much owning the 5+ cats at one time cost my parents. When I saw the heartbreak that overtook my mother when one of her fur babies died, I decided to have pets was not for me.

      As I grew up I couldn't avoid my passion to work with animals and their owners.  Still, I didn't own any, having children, working, and continuing college helped with that decision. Until, I fostered my first cat, which I reluctantly accepted to do, a favor for the shelter I worked at.  Everyone said it would be a great learning experience for my children.

      Just like raising our children We can't put our pets in plastic bubbles. This world is filled with dangers at every corner. Even still we want to have happy & healthy lives and we want the same for our pets. So if your anything like me there is no shortage of fun things to do in the summertime. But taking precautions is always first and foremost If your dog is like most he/she is probably an avid, excellent swimmer regardless of their size. Most dogs love to swim in any water. The tub, pools, ocean, lake and of course a large muddy puddle. However, it is necessary to be vigilant of any dangers while engaging in fun activities to avoid unnecessary mishaps 

1. Ocean/Salt Water: Water Toxicity, Or Acute Water Intoxication while uncommon, is dangerous and often fatal. With excessive water intake the blood sodium level drops. This allows water to enter the brain and cause brain swelling. It also raises blood pressure which over time could be fatal to major organs such as heart and kidneys,

Top 5 Essentials For Traveling with Your Dog

Traveling With Your Furry Friend.

      Summer is here!  The excitement of that much needed vacation is right around the corner.  If your like most of us, we packing in our heads at least 2 weeks ahead of time.  Yet don't don the actual packing until days before, if not the night before leaving.  Why?  Who knows?  Honestly it's ridiculous the extra stress we add to ourselves when we decide to take a trip.  That once we do finally reach our point of relaxation we are over exhausted.

      In this post I have put the top 5 must haves for your furry friend that you can for obvious reasons pack at the very end. However I'm also adding a handy list of what to be sure is packed.  Whether your traveling by car, plane ,train or boat you will need the top 5.

• 1.  Their Dog Collar:  Might seem obvious, but if you have free roam dogs like mine you could accidently leave it hanging by the door when loading the pups in the car. (I know I have, quite a few times on Road Trips to. TN)

• 2.  Their own Water Bowl:  I know what your thinking, "another no brainer" or "no biggie you could use a cup.  But if your dog is anything like mine whitout "HIS" own water bowl I swear he would die of thirst.

• 3. Their Vaccination List : This is essential, Not only is it proof of ownership it shows your dog is current on the rabies and other must have vaccines. (I have honestly forget mine more than once) "Thank God for Fax Machines"  

• 4.  Their own Bed or Blanket : Long distance in your own car may not seem all to bad because it is familiar.  However some dogs will get car sick after awhile from being anxious.  These 2 things are familiar calming smells to them. After all  planes, trains, or boats, are all unfamiliar smells and sounds for your dog.  So you want to help your dog remain as calm as possible.  After all they don't fully understand this trip is "all for fun".

• 5.  Their Food :  To be honest even I laughed at this one.  Until I had to drive out of my way on my long drive to Tennessee.  Not only was it a pain to stop but I had to find a store that sold "My Dogs" brand of food.

Where Did Dora Go?

      Anyone who knows me will tell you I am an avid pet lover.  Like anyone, I do what is necessary to me to make my pets as happy and healthy as possible.  Or so I thought, Until that horrible day 3 years ago May.

      This is Dora, she's not an ordinary cat (I know most pet owners say that about their animals).  But Dora is unique to me, I think she truly feels she is partly a dog. What I mean is that every day when breakfast is done she races to the door first and rings the bell to go out.  (Lol, Yes I have a bell hanging on my door)My dogs are all trained to ring it with their nose when they need to go out.  She is the leader always in front of the dogs on our daily walks.  Because of this, I made sure she was microchipped in case she ever went missing.  I was confident that this was enough.





      On that day, however, a bunny in the neighbors' yard caught her eye and she scurried off.  I didn't worry much because she would usually just run back to the house and be there waiting when I came back with the dogs.  But she wasn't there, Why? I wasn't sure. I still wasn't worried yet.  Until dinner time rolled around and she still wasn't home I began to worry.  After dinner I walked the dogs again and called to Dora in hopes she would jump out of a bush and continue being a leader of our pack. But NOTHING!
